ALVIN S. SIMPLETON SAYS IT’S A SHAME

I dont agree that college athletes should be paid. Hey, they’re student-athletes. But, man, give them a little money to go to the movies.

Paying student athletes is not what got the philosopher of common sense upset. No, sir. What got me upset is I read in the July 15 New York Times that some colleges and universities don’t have insurance and don’t pay the bill when an athlete is injured. Man, that poor kid and his parents are sometimes left with a big doctor’s bill.

That just aint right. If the athlete is injured while performing on the field or on the court, it seems to me the college (do colleges still exist?) or university oughta pay the doctor bill. Hey, I betcha if he or she is a star athlete, the college or university pays the bill, not out of generosity or cause it’s the right thing to do, but cause they want the athlete back on the field or court.

Course not all college and universities refuse to pay an athlete’s doctor bills. Them big schools do but woe to the athlete in them small schools.

Ifn my grandson wins an athletic scholarship, one of the things I plan to ask is do the school what he gon attend have medical insurance?

Them athletes what gon play professionally probably don’t have to worry, but that other 98%, now that got a problem if they injured.

It’s just a damn shame.
