ALVIN S. SIMPLETON SAYS IT’S FOOTBALL TIME

I know we in the middle of an election cycle. Them midterm elections coming up is causing a whole lotta lying and jiving.

Man, I say relax and watch some football. Down here in Knoxville, Tennessee, the drama of the University of Tennessee Vols football team continues, and I never tire of reading bout it.

At the end of last season, the newly hired coach just up and left and took his dream job in California coaching the University of Southern California Trojans. Man, a whole lotta folks was sho mad at the guy cause it done us wrong. He only stayed one season and then left us with a team still trying to find its way after the coach who had been here for a long time was fired.

I aint mad at the one season guy cause it just football, you know what I mean. Now with another new coach, I get to watch the drama of rebuilding the team cause, baby, he got a lotta freshmen and sophomores. Watching them Vols takes my mind off Sarah Palin and the Tea Party.

I say its time to let all that serious stuff go and ifn you’re a real American, you’ll watch football cause that’s what real Americans do this time of year.

Oh yeah, I’m ready for some football.

ALVIN S. SIMPLETON SEES HOPE

What the Philosopher of Commonsense wants to know is if there is any hope that religious tolerance will return to the United States any time soon? Because, man, he or she done left the country to the whacko idiotperts.

I read a story in the Huffington Post bout Texas attacking textbooks again. This time the State Board of Education, which oughta be the Board of Misinformation, claims the social study textbooks they reviewed exhibited pro-Islamic and anti-christian bias and that past social studies textbooks have also been “tainted” with pro-Islamic and anti-Christian bias.

I guess them folks in Texas want to reverse the religious intolerance shown by textbook publishers. No more pro-Islamic views. The publishers, I guess, must show pro-Christian views or more tolerance toward Christianity and less tolerance toward Islam.

Curious fact: no other bad religion is mentioned, only Islam.

But, man I aint ready to give up on America because of few idiotperts. Signs of tolerance: the pastor dude in Florida didn’t burn the Koran; a Roman Catholic Archbishop has denounced the hate and intolerance swirling around “ground zero” and the community center the Muslims are building near it. Some preachers of all faiths spoke out against pastor dude.

America is hope itself.

ALVIN S. SIMPLETON SAYS HIS 15 MINUTES IS OVER

It is Saturday morning, and I’ll be watching the news all day to see if Pastor Dude in Florida will carryout his threat to burn the Koran. He has said he will not burn the Koran, so maybe he realizes his 15 minutes of fame is over.

But man, I dont trust no publicity hound like Pastor Dude, so the Philosopher of Common Sense will be keepin a close eye on him. Okay, I know I caint do nothing bout it ifn he changes his mind and burns the Koran. But hey, I’m a real  American and I will exercise my right to speak out against intolerance.

As far as burning the Koran sparking violence gainst our troops and American citizens round the world, them mad terrorist, militants, insurgents, whatever you want to call ’em killing folks anyway, even other Muslims.

And let me leave youall with this thought: not all Muslims or followers of Islam are terrorist. Hell, most are just ordinary folks, kinda like you and me.

ALVIN S. SIMPLETON SAYS ANOTHER WAR WE LOSING

For 40 years or so, the US has been fighting a losing war against drugs, and it is another war no one wishes to admit is being lost. I read in my hometown newspaper the Knoxville News Sentinel recently that over the 40 years, the drug war has cost 1 trillion dollars. Man, that is a one with a lotta zeros behind it.

According to the story in the newspaper, “Records indicate marijuana and prescription drug abuse are climbing, while cocaine use is way down.” Man, the Feds are grabbing more drugs than ever, yet they aint cut down on use. Demand and supply, baby, that’s what is workin in the drug trade.

Every time I read bout the police seizing so many pounds of weed, I just wait, and sure enough, in a few weeks out comes a report showing drugs still traveling north from down in Texas or somewhere.

But help may be on the way, for you see, the DEA is looking for folks who can interpret ebonics. What is ebonics, you may ask? Well, some say it is Black English and is a separate language. I be Black and I aint never heard no ebonics. Anyway, the DEA feels it needs interpreters to translate conversations heard on wiretaps. The speakers, apparently, are speaking ebonics.

Me, I think them drug dealers are just speaking in code cause they know The Man is listening.

I aint no expert, but it do seem to me that to win this here war on drugs, you got to stop demand.

But ifn you want a job and can speak ebonics, by all means apply to the DEA. Hey, maybe you’ll help make a dent in the drug war.
