ALVIN S. SIMPLETON SAYS WE’VE HEARD THIS BEFORE

During the war in Iraq, we never read any negative reports on the progress of the war. I suppose that in wars, it is the natural reaction of the administration to report only good news—the military is always progressing in its drive to defeat the enemy.

The Obama administration is no different. In the report recently released to the public, it claims progress is being made. However, certain of the President’s words should raise red flags. He said that progress hasn’t “come fast enough,” and the report describes the progress as fragile. The timeline for withdrawing troops next summer is on track.

Some reasons why we should leave as soon as possible: The President of Afghanistan is a crook, and runs a government based on corruption.

The Afghan people do not trust government, any government.

The Taliban and al Qaeda continue to have a safe haven in Pakistan.

Most of all, we can’t do what England and Russia failed to do: make Afghanistan a western-style nation.

ALVIN S. SIMPLETON SAYS HIS 15 MINUTES IS OVER

It is Saturday morning, and I’ll be watching the news all day to see if Pastor Dude in Florida will carryout his threat to burn the Koran. He has said he will not burn the Koran, so maybe he realizes his 15 minutes of fame is over.

But man, I dont trust no publicity hound like Pastor Dude, so the Philosopher of Common Sense will be keepin a close eye on him. Okay, I know I caint do nothing bout it ifn he changes his mind and burns the Koran. But hey, I’m a real  American and I will exercise my right to speak out against intolerance.

As far as burning the Koran sparking violence gainst our troops and American citizens round the world, them mad terrorist, militants, insurgents, whatever you want to call ’em killing folks anyway, even other Muslims.

And let me leave youall with this thought: not all Muslims or followers of Islam are terrorist. Hell, most are just ordinary folks, kinda like you and me.

ALVIN S. SIMPLETON SAYS IT AINT OVER IN IRAQ

In the dead of night, the strykers rolled across the Iraq border into Kuwait on the first leg of bringing home the combat troops in Iraq. To be sure, 50,000 noncombat troops remain, and we now got to foot the bill for some more undetermined years. As if that aint enough, the State Department done hired private security firms to guard diplomates and embassy personnel. Maybe there aint no more combat for out troops in Iraq, but money is still being spent on the ill-conceived military adventure that began in 2003. And I’m guessing that some more young american men and women, though supposedly in noncombat units, will die.

So, I say it aint over in Iraq.

The two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan done cost the US more than a trillion dollars, and the money spigot is still open. What bothers the philosopher of common sense is the government aint doing nothin to pay for the wars with going int further debt. I sure hopes the economonee improves soon so we common sense folks can start talkin bout leaving Afghanistan.

ALVIN S. SIMPLETON HAS SOME QUESTIONS

If illegals are undocumented, how does a pollster tell how many are in the country or a state? In other words, how does anyone know there are 500,000 illegals in AZ? One aspect of an illegal immigrant’s behavior is hiding for fear of deportation. Man, they stay out of sight.

How do I tell whether governments secrets will harm national security if revealed or whether they are hiding government incompetency or mistakes? I can’t, and aint no government gonna reveal its incompetency or mistakes, especially mistakes in war that costs lives.

Why would the US keep secret the fact that the Taliban used a heat seeking missile to bring down a helicopter? I would have said, damn, them guys used a missile that we probably gave them a long time ago. Maybe they didn’t want the Taliban to know how effective the missiles are. More likely they didn’t want the public (us) to know them Taliban done used one of the weapons we probably gave them to kill some of our troops.

Why do people continue to use negative ads close to election election time? It works. Ask any politician if he or she plans to use negative ads, and, he’ll say Lord no. He or she will disavow negative ads by groups on his behalf. Ask any voter if he or she responds to negative ads, and she or he will also Lord no. And yet, they work.

Will Sarah Palin run for president in 2012? She’s good at self-promotion but her experience as governor says she aint the skills and abilities to run the country.

ALVIN S. SIMPLETON SAYS HE DON’T DO RESOLUTIONS

At one time in my misguided youth I made New Year’s resolutions that I never kept. This made me wonder when I reached middle age, which was around 50, why was I wasting my time planning to do things I knew I would never do. So, I don’t do New Year’s resolutions.

But, I do try to start off the new year with a clean slate. Therefore, I discarded all my notes on subjects for this blog so I can begin accumulating new notes for 2010.

I’m an optimist. I believe this year will be better than the next. I believe this despite the fact that the year for me start off on a negative note: I didn’t get a raise in my pension. But, I’m still healthy and able to pay what few debts I have.

This year I believe the economy will get better, maybe not a full recovery, but better than last year.

Bankers, as they are already doing, will try to figure even more ways to get around the new credit card regulations. I know most of us can’t go without them credit cards but I sho wish we could, then we could tell them bankers to shove it where the sun don’t shine.

The Iraqis will go on killing each other trying to gain a political advantage.

In Afghanistan, the Taliban will be heard but rarely seen, and the government will be as corrupt as it was before the recent bad elections chose the same man as president.

North Korea will continue its dance in trying to get the US to sign a nonaggression treaty.

The government of Iran will continue to blame the US and Europe for troubles of its own making.

Lastly, conservatives will go even more negative on President Obama. Nothing he does will be right.

Well, there you have my predictions for 2010. And no I don’t plan to look back when 2011 rolls in to see if they are correct.

ALVIN S. SIMPLETON ASKS WHY ARE WE IN AFGHANISTAN

I once axed this question of President Bush bout Iraq. Now, I ax President Obama, who done proclaimed the war in Afghanistan to be a necessary war. Why the hell are we there? I mean please define victory for me.

I think we want to prevent al-Qaida from settin up them trainin camps in Afghanistan. to do that we got to do the impossible, we got to beat the Taliban. Man, aint no nation ever beat any of them bad dudes in that country, dont make no difference ifn they Taliban or warlords or whatever. how come we think we can do it?

We aint very good at bringing democracy to countries like Afghanistan cause we dont study they history. No, Iraq aint no democracy and aint never gon be one cause soon or later a strong man will rise up and put down everybody else cause that the way it always been.

Afghanistan, well, some warlord will take over part of the country while the Taliban take over the rest. How we gon beat the Taliban in they own country? We gon ax them to surrender unconditionally? We gon run them outa Afghanistan? they aint goin no where. we the ones a long way from home, baby.

I say let them Taliban have the country but tell’em ifn they let al-Qaida set up camps, we’ll be back.

ALVIN S. SIMPLETON SAYS AINT THESE REPLAYS

Didn’t Brett Favre retire and unretire last year? Now think bout this, he didn’t help the Jets last year, so why do the Vikings think a 39-year-old, washed up man can help them. Get real folks, Favre was once a great quarterback but now he aint even just a journeyman football player. Man, they gon pay the guy a lotta money to embarrass himself and the team. The Vikings Super Bowl contenders with Favre. Come on, that’s a joke, right?

I see in this morning’s newspaper that President Obama praised the Afghanistan for votin. Hey, aint that what President Bush did when them Iraqis voted? Votin don’t solve the problems of the people who are threaten on all sides by the Taliban and the Afghan government. And ifn the government is corrupt and the same dudes are put back in office, what the hell good will a vote do?

Common sense says let Favre stay retired. And get the US of A out of Afghanistan.
